Fiat has a rich racing heritage under the Abarth name from xxxx onwards. Founded in xxxx in Bologna Italy by Carlo Abarth, the scorpion was chosen as the company logo to match Carlo's astrological sign (Scorpio). The first Fiat so sport the Abarth badge was the funky Abarth xxxx Biposto; the car with the futuristic middle headlight design and rear fins. In the xxxx's Abarth was successful in hill climbing and sports car racing, mainly in classes from 850cc to xxxxcc, competing with Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino. After a 19-year partnership, Fiat officially took over the Abarth name on July 31, xxxx.
The acquisition of Abarth ended the days of sport prototyping and hill climb racing, but continued on to make Fiat rally cars such as the Fiat 124 Abarth Rally and the 131 Abarth. Although the official company name changed a few times through the 80's and 90's, Abarth has always inspired performance vehicles and continues to do so today. xxxx saw the essential re-birth of the Abarth name with the launch of the Abarth Grande Punto and Sxxxx.
This beautifully restored xxxx Fiat 695 SS is actually a Fiat 500 R with an Abarth appearance package. The 500 R was produced between xxxx to xxxx, and boasted a 2 cylinder 4 stroke 594cc engine putting out 18 hp. This particular Fiat chassis was made by Autobianchi, which was an Italian automobile manufacturer created jointly by Bianchi, Pirelli and Fiat in xxxx.
